Join us on an Augmented Reality
journey around the world

Follow the path of legendary world explorers Francis Drake and Marco Polo as they boldly go where no man had gone before.

Get Closer to the Action

GlobetrottAR puts you in the driver's seat, giving you complete control over the experience.

What is this? I don't even...

Take a chill pill! This is simply a cool project that our team created.

  • How it works

Using GlobetrottAR with your Android phone, aim your camera onto the globe to see an augmented explorer travel the earth along with facts about the travels, all controlled by a scrollable timeline.

  • Project goals

We wanted to create an exploratory experience using augmented reality technologies in tandem with a tangible and classic object - an actual world globe.

  • Technologies used

We used Unity together with Vuforia to track the globe, along with Maya and Blender to create the 3D models.

  • Challenges

Tracking the globe consistently has been the biggest challenge, as it does not have clear edges for Vuforia to track. As Vuforia isn't open source, that also made it harder for us to tailor the experience.

  • Lessons learned

Spherical image tracking is hard, especially if you use a locked framework with limited to no possibility of customizing the tracking behaviour.
